CFNS’s hands on approach is due directly to our staff’s personal experience with the placement of long-term Live-in caregivers. All of our staff are either previous clients who used CFNS’s services to find a live-in caregiver or were once a live-in caregiver themselves, who came to Canada to work for a Canadian family.

Our Story
Founding partner, Shellie Sigurdson is a mother of three who understands a busy parent’s childcare needs. When her son was just 5 months old she became pregnant with twin girls. Quickly realizing a need for assistance she began researching the different childcare options available to her. "Not only was having a live-in nanny going to be financially advantageous, the quality of care, flexibility and overall support in the home was exactly what we were looking for."
As Shellie started her search for a live-in nanny, she was disappointed with the overall approach and service on how the agencies conducted the hiring process. "I found with most agencies, it was about the quick hire. There are great nannies out there, but I also wanted someone that would be a compatible match, to fit in with our family’s needs and lifestyle. Every family is different and so is every caregiver. Even though it’s an employer/ employee arrangement, the relationship is personal. Not only are they caring for your children, they are also living in your home. So it’s very important you have a great relationship with your caregiver."
Shellie ended up hiring someone on her own. Her nanny started before the twins were born. Three years later, her caregiver continues to add value to her children and her family’s lives. Having a live-in nanny has truly exceeded all of our expectations."
Based on her own positive experience and with her experiences helping other families go through the same process, Shellie decided not to return to her career but to instead open her own agency.

Shellie’s experiences were mirrored by another of CFNS’s staff members, Lori Somerville. With the blessing of twins came the challenge of finding suitable childcare on her own that would fit her family’s unique needs and help maintain a healthy balance in her household. Lori quickly realized that having a live-in caregiver- caring for the children, assisting with housework and preparing meals- was a massive stress reliever and played an important role in her family’s lives.

About the Live-In-Caregiver Program
Federally sponsored program, the Foreign Live-In-Caregiver Program is a regulated 24 month program for caregivers to work with a Canadian family. Caregivers must meet and pass all Canadian Immigration Standards in order to qualify to work in Canada. Upon completion of the 24 months, the caregiver will have the potential opportunity to gain permanent resident status in Canada.
